SEDA Receives 2007 Economic Development Achievement Award

The Alabama Development Office, which is Alabama's state economic development agency, awarded the 2007 Economic Development Achievement Award to The Shoals Economic Development Authority.  ADO Director Neal Wade presented the agency’s annual achievement award to SEDA President Forrest Wright at the 2007 Alabama Manufacturer of the Year Awards Program on April 18, 2007, in Montgomery.  The award is given in recognition of superior economic development efforts in attracting new and expanding industries during the previous year.
"Competing and succeeding without an interstate is no easy chore. It takes determination, planning and the investment of both time and money in the 'local product' that captures the attention of prospective industry,” Wade said. “Alabama Development Office is pleased to recognize the Shoals Economic Development Authority with the 2007 Economic Development Achievement Award."
Mr. Wright attributed the success of SEDA to the committed efforts of the entire community.  "They've named SEDA as the recipient, but really The Shoals area is the recipient because any economic development organization is only as good as the community it represents."

Wise Alloys Project to Widen Can Sheet Width

Wise Alloys Facility in The Shoals

Wise Metals Group's project to increase the capabilities of its Wise Alloys facility in The Shoals continues to move forward.  The project will widen the cold-rolling equipment so that can stock will be produced in 72-inch aluminum sheets by the end of 2008, which will enable Wise customers to achieve higher levels of productivity and cost efficiency.
“We are eager to enter this next step in product offerings for increased width can sheet," said Phil Tays, Wise Alloys executive vice president / plant manager.
Danny Mendelson, Wise Metals Group chief strategic officer, added, "We are building upon the successes of our initiatives to introduce new product offerings to the market that began with our recent highly successful introduction into the commercial products market."
The project will widen what is known as the 3-Stand Cold Mill, which currently runs coils that are 61" to 63" wide.  After the widening, the mill will be able to handle a maximum coil width of 73".  The photos below show the 3-Stand Cold Mill as it is currently.

Alabama Development Office Named Top State Economic Development Agency in the U.S.
The Alabama Development Office (ADO) has been named the winner of the 2006 Competitiveness Award from Site Selection magazine.  This award honors ADO as the top state-level economic development agency in the United States for its success in attracting new capital investment in 2006.
"This award is recognition of the professional staff we have employed at the Alabama Development Office and the depth of economic development experience at the local, regional, and corporate levels in Alabama," said Governor Bob Riley.
In 2006, more than $3.1 billion in capital investment and 24,780 announced jobs resulted from the location or expansion of 568 companies in Alabama.  "I think that the job creation numbers for 2006 clearly indicate that we have enjoyed record job growth throughout Alabama," said Neal Wade, ADO Director.  "Even today, we are working more mega projects than ever before that could continue to expand job growth in all parts of the state."
One of these mega projects, a multi-billion-dollar steel project, announced this month that it has selected a site just north of Mobile, Alabama.  This site was chosen from an initial pool of 67 sites in 20 states.
Alabama Ranked as Fourth Fastest-Growing Exporter in U.S.
Alabama has been ranked as the fourth fastest-growing exporter in the United States for 2006, thanks to an increase in exports from $10.7 billion in 2005 to $13.8 billion in 2006.  This 28.5% increase was well above the 14.7% average increase for the nation as a whole, and placed Alabama ahead of all states except Delaware, Washington, and Nevada.
"Alabama companies continue to be innovative and highly competitive in the global market," said Alabama Governor Bob Riley.  "This is especially good news for our citizens, because the end result is more jobs and higher-paying jobs here at home."
Governor Riley's administration launched a state initiative called "Export Alabama" in 2004 to open trade opportunities for Alabama companies.  A key aspect of this initiative has been several overseas trade missions, as well as seminars held throughout Alabama to educate businesses on export opportunities and government assistance that could improve their ability to export goods and services.
The International Trade Division of the Alabama Development Office works closely with the Export Alabama Trade Alliance to promote and develop trade opportunities for Alabama companies, both large and small.  In fact, of the nearly 3,000 businesses in Alabama that export to overseas markets, over 75% are small- or medium-sized companies.  Any companies in The Shoals that are interested in export assistance should contact SEDA at 256-764-0351.
